History
Since its inception in 1974, Royco Hotels (operating initially as Relax Hotels and Resorts 1975 - 1992 and as Royal Host Corporation 1998 - 2006) under the guidance of Terry Royer and Greg Royer has successfully managed over 200 different hotels and resorts across Canada and the United States for third parties.
Royco Hotels was also the master franchisor for 120 hotels in Canada. In 2006 Royal Host Corporations involvement in hotel management and franchising in Canada and United States exceeded 16,000 rooms as a public company. At the end of 2006 Royco Hotels once again became a private company.
Over the years, Royco Hotels, as a multi brand operator, has and continues to manage properties under various brands. These include Hilton, Country Inns & Suites, Super 8, Travelodge, Holiday Inn, Best Western, Ramada, Choice and unbranded and have received innumerable management awards from these franchisors.
- The founders of Royco Hotels have been managing hotels since 1975 when the Royers built their first hotel in Red Deer, Alberta as Relax Hotels.
- By the early 1980s, the Royers were managing an additional 27 hotels under the Relax Inn flag and the company also ventured into resort management with the addition of the Banff Rocky Mountain Resort (Banff, Alberta) and the Grand Okanogan Resort (Kelowna, British Columbia). Other managed resorts include the Banff Gate Mountain Resort (Banff, Alberta), Royal Harbor Resort (Thornbury, Ontario), and Las Gaviotas (La Paz) and Portofino de Cabo (Cabo San Lucas) in Mexico.

In 1992 Relax became Royco Hotels and Resorts and partnered with Forte PLC to become the Master Franchisor for the Travelodge and Thriftlodge brands in Canada. All Relax Inns were re-branded. Royco under its wholly owned subsidiary Travelodge Canada, franchised 120 properties across Canada.

Royco took over management of 100 U.S. properties spread across the United States in 1996 for Chartwell Leisure Inc. until mid 1998 when Chartwell was sold for a substantial gain for its shareholders. During this period, Royco managed approximately 150 properties across North America.

Royal Host REIT a public trust company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange was formed in late 1997 with an initial portfolio of 18 hotels. Royco became Royal Host Corp. in 1999 and became part of the REIT.

An additional 18 properties of different brands were added to the REIT portfolio in 1998 for a total of 36 owned properties which Royal Host Corp. Royco Hotels and Resorts) managed on behalf of the REIT.

In 1999 Royal Host Corp. (Royco) was awarded hotel management contracts for 33 Super 8 properties located in Washington, Oregon and Alaska and Canada. 27 of these are located in the United States.

3 additional properties under the Ramada, Holiday Inn and Best Western flags were added to the REIT portfolio in 2002 and 2003, and managed by Royal Host Corp.

In 2004, Royal Host Corp. formed Royal Host Management, Inc., a Delaware corporation to serve as a US based subsidiary to manage hotel properties for Supertel Hospitality, Inc., a self-administered real estate investment trust (a "REIT") which is traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol SPPR. The company currently manages 106 hotels for Supertel.

January 1, 2007 Royco Hotels once again became a private company owned and continuing in its tradition of managing hotels across the continent.
Today Royco Hotels continues to be focused on driving revenue and profit for the hotels it operates primarily in the economy, mid markets and focused service segments while focusing on the needs of the various stakeholders. Royco believes that to achieve this it must continue to focus on its people, their training and their ability to deliver the service expected by the consumer day in and day out. |
